Genres offered include jazz, acrobatics, tap, ballet and lyrical. We welcome dancers from 3 years of age. All students participate in our fabulous annual concert in December, and we also offer optional exams and competitions.

About Nerida

About Nerida

Nerida Glanfield is the studio owner and principal teacher of Allegro Dance.

Nerida opened Allegro Dance on Weatherburn Way, Kardinya, in January 2010. She teaches every class at the studio, and gets to know every student. Nerida has been teaching dance for over 30 years and yoga since 2018.

Prior to working full-time at the studio, Nerida had a management career in the professional performing arts industry. As such, she has a unique perspective as a dance teacher. Her focus is on dance contributing to a student's growth into a well-rounded person rather than purely as path to a competitive and then full-time career. Although she also encourages those professional ambitions when a student is motivated in that direction.

Originally from Kalgoorlie, Nerida's Dance Boutique was a successful studio winning many local competitions, and placing in Perth events such as the West Coast Dance Festival and the Mandurah Performing Arts Festival. This success continues with Allegro Dance.

Nerida has a Bachelor of Arts (Arts Management) from the WA Academy of Performing Arts, a teaching diploma from the Australian Theatrical Dance Association and a Master of Arts (Studies in Religion) from the University of New England. Nerida was Manager of the Goldfields Arts Centre from 1996 - 2008.

From some of our Dance Mums & Dancers

I couldn’t be more grateful for Allegro Dance! Having been dancing at Allegro since I was 9, now 19, Nerida has not only inspired my love for dance, but she has fostered a community where every individual is seen, heard and nurtured. Allegro dance has been more than a dance school, it’s a space where we can be ourselves and have fun!!!

Nerida is a kind and caring teacher. I have been going to Allegro dance classes since I was 6 years old and I am now almost 19. She is always inclusive of everyone and an amazing teacher. She puts lots of time into making the end of year concerts fabulous and lots of fun. Thanks so much Nerida

We love Allegro!!! It is Callie’s happy place and has been for five years. As a parent I get to see Callie shine at her brightest when she is at Allegro or even just talking about her positive experiences with Nerida and the Allegro girls.

My daughter loves dancing at Allegro and has so many friends- older and younger at the dance school and in her classes here. It has given her confidence about herself and lots of joy to attend Nerida's classes. She loves being part of the end of year concerts too which are amazing, fun and so professional . The studio is a place where my daughter has another family and Nerida is so thoughtful and really cares about her students. Nerida has been so accomodating with fitting in dance classes with netball and other commitments too.

My Blog

A lot of dance families are new to the dance world, and there are many questions I get asked quite a bit. Here are some posts that delve a bit further into the wonderful world of dance.

Why is ballet considered the foundation of dance?

Classical Ballet is often called the “foundation of dance”, so what does that actually mean?  Ballet provides the technical structure, vocabulary, and...

Frequently Asked Questions

Dance classes are a whole new world for dance parents, here are some questions you may have about starting at Allegro Dance:

If your child is aged 4 - 6 years, the Mini Junior class is Saturday morning 9.45am - 10.30am. If your child is 7 years or older, we have classes after school and Saturday morning, with sessions for various genres and age groups. Please contact us and we can advise the best class for your dancer.

No - you can pay by class and if your child decides they don't want to dance, then you do not have to pay for the whole term. When joining, we ask that you submit an enrolment form so that we have relevant details. If you want to continue for the year, no need to enrol each term, your enrolment covers the calendar year.

For 4 - 6 year olds, the Mini Juniors class is a mix of all genres to introduce them to foundational dance moves and have fun! For older students, we suggest they start with jazz or ballet depending on what appeals to them. Jazz is modern dance to upbeat music. Ballet is the traditional form of classical dance - think graceful movements and some jumping. Tap is done with tap shoes, where we make percussive sounds with the feet. Acrobatics includes tricks such as cartwheels, bendbacks and stretching - ie: leg splits. At Allegro Dance, we have a policy that students cannot enrol in just tap or acro, they are also required to do either jazz or ballet to develop their dance quality.

We do not have a set uniform at Allegro Dance. Students can wear dancewear in any colour they prefer. Gear should be tight fitting so that the teacher can see them and provide safe instruction. Leotards or singlets with either bike shorts, a ballet skirt or leggings are ideal. Normal clothes such as dresses, shorts or jeans are not suitable as the children cannot move well. Hair up in a ponytail or bun so that their hair doesn't get into their eyes. Dangly jewellery is also unsafe.

Mini Juniors and Ballet - pink ballet pumps. Jazz - either tan acro shoes or jazz boots. Tap shoes for tap class - tan colour only. Acro - tan acro shoes.

We have second hand shoes available at the studio. New dance shoes can be purchased from Studio Scene, 352 Marmion Street, Melville.

Allegro Dance is predominantly a recreational studio, however students who are interested in solos or duos in external competitions are welcome. We currently have a small comp team. Dancers require at least 2 years dance experience before joining our team. We do not currently do competition troupes.

Allegro Dance does not do formal exams with an external association. We previously participated in exams with the Australian Theatrical Dance Association (which has ceased operation). In terms 1 & 2, some of our ballet, jazz & tap classes learn exam combinations and routines, and we have an ATDA examiner come to the studio for in-house exams. These are optional for students.

All students participate in the annual concert held in early December at a local theatre. This is a chance for the children to dress up in a gorgeous costume and have fun performing in a professional setting in front of their families. We attempt to keep the costs low with affordable costumes, rehearsal fees and tickets. All families are encouraged to help with some fundraising to cover theatre costs to keep tickets low.

Payment can be made weekly or by term. Cash and eftpos are available at the studio, or direct bank transfers can be arranged. Whichever is best for you.

It is much preferred if parents do not stay to watch classes as this creates extra noise in the studio and can be distracting for dancers and teachers. However, we understand that new parents are keen to ensure that the classes are appropriate for your children, and some may require your presence to feel comfortable during their first classes, so you are welcome to stay during this introductory period. A maximum of one adult per family, and you are welcome to stay in the front office (you can see into the studio from our couches!).
